Bluebells and Portraits

Spent a really lovely afternoon in Harcourt Arboretum, shooting the bluebells and practicing my portraiture skills with my lovely wife Zoë. Below are a few shots that we took. All pictures by me (apart from the ones of me, which Zoë took) and I’m gradually improving my post processing, having had lots of practice on several weddings over the last year!

It was really difficult getting the lighting right, as the sun was still very bright, so the only place we could shoot happily was in the shade.

Lens used was both the 28-75 f2.8 Tamron, and the 24-105 f4 Canon L, and I used a portaflash reflector to guide what little sunlight there was filtering through the trees to help illuminate the subject (although as it was so weak it only made a slight difference).

Saturated slightly and cropped in Lightroom, with borders added in Photoshop. I used a combination of unsharp mask, gaussian blur, channel mixer and layer masks to process the images.

Winter trees

Taken in Shotover woods, Oxford, before we had the big snow. Sitting inside listening to 6 Music, and tucked up warm.
Suffering from a little bit of photographers block at the moment, but really enjoying the latest Photocritic post on breaking photographers block – giving me plenty of ideas to try, both indoors and with my exiting photos, and help my ideas grow!

Dig out your library, see if there’s any of your photos you’ve missed. Re-edit some photo sets.
